Video Description:

The BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop was set up in 1958, born out of a desire to create ‘new kinds of sounds’. Alchemists of Sound looks at this creative group from its inception, through its golden age when it was supplying music and effects for cult classics like Doctor Who, Blake’s Seven and Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, and charts its fading away in 1995 when, due to budget cuts, it was no longer able to survive.

There are interviews with composers from the Workshop, as well as musicians and writers who have been inspired by the output. Great archive footage of the Workshop and its machinery is accompanied by excerpts of the, now cult, TV programmes that featured these sounds.

First broadcast October, 2003. Last Broadcast May, 2005.

This includes some awesome shots and segments of Delia Derbyshire.

PS – Does anyone know who the guy is in the dark standing behind everyone getting interviewed?!?!?! LOL

So I stopped in one of the local music shops here, they had a surprisingly good selection of used cheap keyboards. Ensoniq, Korgs, Moogs, and more. Off in the corner I found a pretty beat up Korg M1R (rack edition for the M1 workstation). Definitely in need for some major TLC. Rack Rash, check. Possible few broken buttons, check. A few inches of sticky strips of who knows what, check. But I managed to walk out with it for a great deal. Couldn’t help myself.

Now for the fun part of exploring this Classic Synth. That’s the funny part about this synth. You either love it, or hate it’s sound. It’s got that ‘early 90s production/pop’ sound written all over it. Not that Roland early 90s ROM/PCM sound, but a bit more distinguished and mystical. The sounds are nostalgia for me.

Korg M1 Resources and Links

Many of the older M1 and korg resource pages are full of deadlinks to geocities pages, or yahoo discussion groups long gone. But here are a few worth browsing:

Evolver Programming Tips Excerpts:

“Warmer” Sounds

The Evolver can make many ultra-bright and buzzy sounds due to its extensive feedback and distortion stages but sometimes people miss the subtler side of the beast. For a warmer sound use little or no distortion, close the filter just a bit and turn off the feedback and delay lines. I’ve managed to get dead-on Prophet5 timbres this way.

Adding “Punch”

Set the envelopes to linear, and use a Mod to modulate AmpEnv All by itself (lin through log responses with positive and negative self-modulation).
This is of course fun on the filter envelopes as well.

Fatter Bass/Pad Sounds

Set the same sound in both channels (detuned saws, for instance). With the filters at the 24dB setting, increasing resonance cuts the passband as on the Moog filters. Set Envelope 3 to minimum attack, maximum decay and release, and sustain to maximum. This “creates” an offset, a continuous “on” signal while the keys are gated. Modulate one filters’ resonance up (just one), or of the overall resonance level is high, us it to modulate one filters’ resonance to its minimum. You get the resonant character plus the size of the non-resonant filter. Use Tri and Sine waves on that side too.

Don’t forget the Noise!

Adding subtle amounts of the noise generator can add another dimension to your patch. Also if you are using a sequence patch try experimenting with a variety of noise gen levels for each step, works wonders when used with the built in Delay.

This is a demonstration of a few patches I made on the V-Synth XT. You can now download the sound bank on www.jaybmusic.net. My patches re just as versatile as the synth itself. You’ve got vivid pads, aggressive leads, crushed basslines, even small arrangements with drums and also a guitar amplifier. And there’s even more to come!
